Bring a little festive atmosphere without extra work

A small festive touch can make the cottage feel like part of the occasion without leaving marks, scattered materials or a large packing job.

Find out what is already there

Ask whether the property will be decorated for your dates and what guests may add. Photographs from a previous season do not confirm the current arrangement. If the host supplies decorations, leave them as instructed rather than moving fragile items to make room for your own. You may need very little beyond a card or a simple table arrangement.

Choose items that stand on an appropriate surface without attaching to walls, beams or furniture. Ask before using any fixing, including products described as removable. Different finishes can respond differently, and a holiday property is not the place to test a new adhesive. Avoid glitter, confetti or loose materials that spread into carpets or the garden.

Coordinate across households if several people want to bring something. A single small arrangement may work better than three boxes arriving independently, particularly when table space is needed for meals. Tell people what is already planned and keep the rest optional. This also avoids the organiser feeling obliged to find a place for every item someone has carried a long way.

Keep the ordinary room usable

Leave dining and preparation space for food, and keep routes and exits clear. Decorations should not make the cottage harder to live in, especially when bags and winter coats are already competing for space. If children or pets are present, choose the arrangement with their needs and the product's instructions in mind rather than treating every ornament as harmless.

Follow the property's rules for candles and electrical items, and keep decorations away from heat. Do not alter fittings or create an improvised lighting setup. A few suitable objects can establish the mood without turning the evening into a project or depending on equipment the host has not approved.

Pack the ending with the beginning

Bring a small box or bag for taking everything home again. Before departure, check beneath furniture and around the table for small pieces. Dispose of any waste according to the host's instructions and leave supplied decorations where they belong. Keeping the display modest makes the final morning easier and allows the occasion to be remembered for the people and meal rather than the effort of removing it.
