Checking cold storage before a large food shop
Before ordering groceries for a week, establish what will actually fit into cold storage.

Ask what is provided
A kitchen description may mention a fridge without saying whether it has a freezer compartment. If you need frozen food or want to refreeze ice packs, confirm the arrangement before shopping. A tiny internal compartment and a separate freezer offer very different amounts of space.
For a group, ask whether the fridge is under-counter or full height, and whether all of it is available to guests. You do not need to calculate every litre. Think about the bulky items you expect to bring: milk, vegetables, drinks and food for several shared dinners. A picture with the door open can sometimes answer the question more clearly than a general assurance.
Shop in stages
A smaller first shop leaves room to learn how the shelves work. It also avoids filling the fridge with food that competes with something unexpected, such as a welcome hamper. Plan another shop around an outing rather than assuming everything must be bought on arrival day.
Consider which drinks can be stored elsewhere until needed, following their labels. Do not use the garden, porch or car as substitute refrigerated storage for perishable food. Outdoor conditions are variable and a cool-feeling place does not provide the controlled storage those products require.
Use the space sensibly
Read any appliance instructions and report a fridge that does not appear to be operating properly. Avoid adjusting unfamiliar controls repeatedly in the hope of making it cool more quickly. Ask the manager when uncertain.
Keep food organised so you can see what needs using, and leave some space rather than packing every shelf tightly. Follow food packaging and appropriate food-safety guidance for storage and transport. At the end of the stay, remove your food unless the owner has explicitly asked otherwise. A realistic shopping plan usually saves more effort than trying to fit an ambitious menu into a freezer the size of a shoebox.
