Give unfamiliar appliances a few minutes of attention
A little attention before pressing buttons is usually quicker than undoing an accidental setting.

Find the right instructions
For a combined appliance, establish which mode is active before putting anything inside. Similar buttons or symbols can refer to different functions. The manufacturer's information should determine which containers and settings are suitable. If you cannot establish that confidently, use a simpler available method and ask the manager before trying the unfamiliar one.
Look for the cottage's appliance notes or the manufacturer's guidance supplied with the machine. Identify the actual appliance rather than following instructions for a similar-looking model.
Start with the task you need to do: heat an oven, wash a small load or make coffee. You do not need to learn every programme. Find the correct basic procedure and any property-specific guidance.
If instructions are absent or unclear, ask the manager. A photograph of the controls can help explain which appliance you mean, but avoid sending unnecessary images of personal items or documents nearby.
Avoid repeated guessing
Some controls have delays, locks or combined functions. Repeatedly pressing buttons can make the display more confusing. Pause, read the guidance and identify what has changed before trying again.
Do not force doors, remove panels or enter maintenance settings. Guests should not need to repair equipment or investigate electrical connections to complete an ordinary task.
If an appliance behaves unusually, smells wrong, leaks or appears damaged, stop using it and report the concern. Follow appropriate emergency guidance if there is immediate danger; a routine message to the host is not enough for an emergency.
Use the right materials
Check which products or accessories belong with the appliance. Dishwasher detergent, washing-up liquid and laundry products are not interchangeable. Likewise, a container that is suitable for one type of heating may not be suitable for another.
Follow labels and appliance instructions, including any restrictions on materials. If you cannot confirm that an item is appropriate, choose another method or ask.
Keep the work area clear and supervise use as required. A holiday setting does not change the ordinary care needed around heat, water and electricity.
Leave useful information
If a minor issue is resolved with the manager's help, note the instruction for the rest of your group so nobody repeats the same confusion. Do not alter or rewrite the owner's guidance yourself.
Report a persistent fault accurately: what you tried, what the display showed and when it happened. Avoid diagnosing a technical cause unless you actually know it.
Before departure, leave appliances in the state requested by the property. Check drums and compartments for your belongings.
An unfamiliar kitchen or utility room becomes easier after the first successful use. Taking a few calm minutes at the beginning usually costs less time than trying to make the equipment behave like the version you have at home.
