Before you choose a cottage for its wood burner
A stove can make a cottage evening appealing. Before booking around it, find out what using it involves.

Confirm that it is available
Check the written listing rather than relying on a photograph. Some fireplaces are decorative, some appliances are seasonal, and some may be unavailable for guest use. Ask whether the stove shown is currently included in the stay you are considering.
Find out whether it supplies the main heat or is an optional extra. A couple who enjoy managing a fire may be happy with one arrangement, while guests who want simple background heating may prefer another. The cottage should remain a workable choice for the way you want to spend your evenings.
Ask how guests receive operating instructions. An unfamiliar stove needs its own guidance; experience with another model is not enough to assume the controls work the same way. The owner should explain whom to contact if anything is unclear.
Understand the fuel arrangement
“Logs included” may mean a starter basket rather than enough for every evening. Ask what is supplied and how any additional approved fuel is obtained. This helps you plan without filling the car with unsuitable material or making an unnecessary shopping stop.
Use only fuel specified for the appliance and follow the supplied instructions. Do not burn packaging, collected garden material or other improvised items. A fireplace is not a way to dispose of rubbish, even when something appears easy to light.
Consider where fuel is stored and whether carrying it is a task someone in the group is willing and able to do. A store outside across a wet courtyard creates a different routine from a small supply beside the hearth. These are modest details, but they shape daily use.
Look at the space around it
Examine the hearth and the seating arrangement. Is the stove close to a route people use constantly? Is there room to sit comfortably without crowding the appliance? The photograph may show a carefully staged room rather than every guest occupying it.
Where children or pets are travelling, ask about the supplied arrangement and plan appropriate supervision. A guard or a closed door does not remove the need to keep people and belongings away from hot surfaces. Do not treat any single accessory as a guarantee.
Keep clothes, bags and drying items away from the stove and use the property's designated drying arrangements instead. A wet day can create a temptation to drape everything near the heat, so deciding where coats go beforehand is useful.
Follow the actual instructions
HETAS provides guidance specifically for holiday-let guests and advises following the manufacturer's instructions. Its guidance includes keeping the appliance doors closed during use and not leaving it turned down to smoulder overnight. Read the owner's instructions for the particular stove rather than using an article as an operating manual.
If something seems wrong, stop and contact the appropriate help rather than experimenting with unfamiliar controls. Know the property's emergency information and alarm arrangements. For an immediate emergency, follow emergency-service guidance; ordinary booking contact is not a substitute.
Do not remove ash or service the appliance unless the host has clearly explained what guests should do and when. Even after a fire appears finished, handling material requires care. The simplest guest routine may be to leave specified tasks to the owner.
Decide whether the feature earns its place
A stove is worthwhile when you will enjoy using it responsibly and have the instructions and supplies to do so. If you expect to return late each evening or nobody wants to manage fuel, it may be less important than comfortable seating and reliable heating.
Compare the rest of the cottage without the glow of the fireplace photograph. Would you still like the room if you chose not to light it one evening? Does the kitchen, bedroom and location suit the trip?
That test keeps an appealing feature in proportion. The stove can add to the holiday, but it should not distract from the everyday arrangements that make the whole stay comfortable.
